Such an encyclopedic all-encompassing collection is not made in a day, not even in a decade. Established in 2019, New Picture Library's foundation rests on the acquisition of the prestigious DeAgostini Picture Library—a collection meticulously developed over decades by the Italian publisher De Agostini. Worldwide photo shoots were regularly commissioned from highly professional photographers – such as Giorgio Nimatallah and Gianni and Alfredo Dagli Orti, just to name a few – not only to increase the picture library’s holdings but also to illustrate a variety of editorial products, from encyclopedias to textbooks, thus offering the reader a detailed view of countless topics such as archaeology, art, nature, science, history, music, literature, fashion, ceramics, furniture, collectibles and more.
Beyond commissioned photography, DeAgostini undertook extensive digitization initiatives, carefully selecting archival and library collections either acquired directly or accessed through exclusive agreements with partner institutions. Just a few examples are: the Italian periodical review L’Illustrazione Italiana, the world's first illustrated weekly news magazine Illustrated London News, miniatures and vintage illustrations available at the Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, the collection of archaeology by Judith Lange.
